Poet Mark Irwin Reading Aug. 28; Open-Mic Reading Sept. 4

August 23, 2004 -- Start your autumn intellectual life with two free events from Lighthouse Writers Workshop, Denver's beacon for literary types.

On Saturday, Aug. 28, at 12:30 p.m., join Lighthouse Writers Workshop as Mark Irwin, a Colorado poet now on the English faculty at the University of Southern California (USC), reads from his latest book of poetry, Bright Hunger (BOA Editions). He'll discuss his process, sign books, and grace the audience with his lyricism.

Well-known poet and Irwin's USC colleague David St. John has observed, "An impeccable craftsman, Mark Irwin writes with a lyrical intensity that somehow combines the brilliance of Valery and the natural ease of observation of William Carlos Williams."

Irwin's reading is free and open to the public at the Vanilla Factory Café, located at 27th and Arapahoe streets in Denver's Curtis Park neighborhood.

Then, Lighthouse Writers Workshop's popular monthly open-microphone literary reading series moves to Saturday, Sept. 4, beginning at 7 p.m. and ending no later than 9 p.m., at Stella's Coffee Haus, at 1476 S. Pearl St. in Denver's Platte Park neighborhood.

Host Chris Sheehan welcomes writers from around the Denver-metro area to share poetry and prose, with a four-minute time limit. Readers can sign up for a time slot on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6:55 p.m.
